The Illinois Valley Diabetes Center offers first-class services for those dealing with pre-diabetes, gestational diabetes, and Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. The Center is accredited by the American Association of Diabetes Educators, and is staffed by certified diabetes educators, pharmacists, dietitians, athletic trainers, licensed social workers and nurse educators.
If you or someone you know has diabetes, St. Margaret’s offers a comprehensive program that includes Diabetes Self Management Classes, in addition to individual appointments with a dietitian and a diabetes nurse educator. Diabetes self-management education includes gaining the knowledge, skills and confidence necessary for taking control of your diabetes. Our mission is to empower people of all ages to appropriately self-manage their diabetes so they may benefit from lifelong good health. Our team of experts in diabetes care offers a variety of services and will work with your entire health care team to improve your health status, and quality of life.
One-on-one diabetes education is offered for gestational diabetes, type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, medication administration and instruction, blood glucose monitoring, insulin pump therapy and all other diabetes-related care. A physician’s order is required. The education includes appointments with the nurse educator and/or registered dietitian and is held on the main campus. Costs are usually covered by insurance.
This test allows you to and your provider to view your glucose graphs 24 hours around the clock for up to 2 weeks. It provides unique insight about how your meals, medications and physical activity affect your blood glucose and makes it easier for you and your provider to make decisions about changing your treatment plan.
We are a contracted Pump Training Center with Certified Pump Trainers. We can assist you with starting and maintaining pump therapy.
We offers a Diabetes Prevention Program that has pending Recognition from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The program is facilitated by Certified Lifestyle Coaches who lead the group discussions and provide support to participants. Sessions are held at the Peru Mall.
This monthly clinic lets clients with diabetes obtain lab testing, a retina scan and brief group education about preventing diabetes complications at one location during one appointment. This clinic is held on the first Wednesday of each month at the CPRA Building (Peru YMCA) 300 Walnut Drive, Peru, IL.
Group education classes are offered as a three-part series. You and your physician can decide if all three classes are needed, or if certain classes would be best for you. A physician referral is required to attend classes. Costs are usually be covered by insurance. Guests are welcome to attend classes with you. Diabetes self-management classes will take place at 925 West Street, Peru, IL.
- Class #1: Diabetes overview, blood glucose and A1c monitoring, diabetes complication prevention and goal setting
- Class #2: Carbohydrate counting, meal planning, high and low blood glucose – symptoms and treatment
- Class #3: A pharmacist, athletic trainer and social worker will answer your questions related to diabetes medications, physical activity and healthy coping
